Maggie Grace is an American actress born Margaret Grace Denig in 1983. Her best-known roles include Shannon Rutherford, a character from ABC's Lost series as well as Kim Mills from the Taken trilogy. Originating from Worthington Ohio she dropped out of high school to move into Los Angeles with her mother after her parents divorce. The year 2001 was a difficult one for her, but despite finances, she was able to land her first major role in the online video series Rachel's Room as the principal character. The TV film Murder in Greenwich where she played a 15-year-old Martha Moxley earned her the nomination of a Young Artist Award. A member of the Gyllenhaal clan she is the daughter of filmmakers Stephen Gyllenhaal and Naomi Achs and is the younger sister of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. As a teenager she appeared in small roles in films made by her father. She also she co-starred alongside her twin brother on Donnie Darko, a cult classic. Later, she was in Adaptation Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and Mona Lisa Smile (both 2002). Gyllenhaal was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in both the action drama Sherrybaby (2005) and the romance comedy Secretary (2002). Both movies were critically acclaimed. After several commercially successful films in 2006 such as World Trade Center she received greater recognition for her performance as Rachel Dawes in the superhero film The Dark Knight (2008). She was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for her role in Crazy Heart, (2009). The following year, she starred in comedy and dramas Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang (2010) Hysteria (2011) and The Won't Back Down (2012). Other roles she has played include an agent in the action-thriller White House Down (2013), a Secret Service agent in the action-thriller White House Down (2013) as well as a singer in Frank (2014) as well as the title role in the drama The Kindergarten Teacher (2018). Gyllenhaal's debut as a filmmaker and writer came in 2021 when she wrote The Lost Daughter, a psychological drama in which she won the Venice International Film Festival Best Screenplay Award. In addition, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
